The NEAA is a member of the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC), a repository for information about health clearances for all breeds that belong to the registry.
The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA) jointly sponsor the CHIC database. The mission statement of CHIC is to provide a source of health information for owners, breeders and scientists that will assist in breeding healthy dogs.
In order to enter a Norwegian Elkhound into the CHIC database, the NEAA Canine Health and Research Committee with the approval of the officers and directors of NEAA determined that clearance information about hips, eyes, kidney function and endocrine levels were mandatory. Once a dog has been tested and results of these tests submitted to OFA, it is eligible to be admitted to the database.
For the exact tests required and to search for the Norwegian Elkhounds listed with CHIC, consult the CHIC website www.caninehealthinfo.org .
Please Note: CHIC requirements for Norwegian Elkhounds have changed. The new requirements can be viewed here As a result, over 200 dogs became newly enrolled in the program. Certificates for these dogs have been mailed. For Further Info: www.offa.org .
