AKC Meet the Breeds ‐ Orlando Florida –December 17 & 18, 2011
The AKC Meet The Breeds 2011 was held this year during the Eukanuba Invitational at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida. Highlighting responsible dog ownership this event gave visitors the chance to get up close and personal with over 160 breeds.
Members of the Cherokee Foothills Norwegian Elkhound Club offered to participate representing the Norwegian Elkhound at this event. With the help of some of our NEAA members who were exhibiting at Eukanuba, the Elkhound breed was well represented. Manning the booth were club members Ken and Debbie Walker, Brooke Hildago, Doris Ingles, Joanna Ingles and Donna Weeks. Stealing the show were canine ambassadors Cederbends Playing with Fire, CH DInors Indian Love Call, CH Dinors I Got My Game On, Elgwoods Ice Diamond, CH Quiquen Quartz, and Norelka Aspens Polar Express, and UAGI Kuma Bear. The elkie ages ranged from puppy to veteran.
The Breed booths were set up in the West Concourse of The Orange County Convention center main entrance lobby area. This was located between the Conformation hall and Agility hall as well as in the adjacent ballrooms. Our booth was located in a ballroom. An official Show Guide was given to each person who entered the venue with detailed maps of booth locations as well as demonstrations and competitions being held.
Decorated with a moose-forest backdrop, the booth included a 3 panel photo display board with pictures of Elkhounds as conformation dogs, agility –obedience dogs and companions. A digital frame provided a slide show of elkhounds at play and at work. Handouts with information on the breed were available to all who visited our booth. Ken Walker donned his Viking costume and along with a Cast Iron cook pot used by hunters to cook their game, with logs and battery powered flames added a note of authenticity to the booth. The dogs were by far the most popular part of our booth. In typical Elkhound style the pups were more than willing to be loved on. We had quite a few visitors who stopped with stories of an Elkhound that once was a part of their life. Our ambassadors tried their hardest to convince these folks that one needed to be a part of their lives again!
This event is well organized and offers parent clubs an excellent venue for one on one contact with potential owners. This is a great educational activity and should be given support by parent and local clubs alike. If you have a chance to attend this event, do so. Better yet volunteer to be a part of it!
To all who participated on behalf of our beloved Elkhounds, THANK YOU!!!
Recent Event: PSNEA Picnic and MUCH More
Virgina Sawyer writes: Our PSNEA Club has a picnic every year in Oregon for our rescues in the area. We also invite all area Elkhound owners. This year even some puppies we bred attended with their owners in tow. It is fun seeing those loved dogs every year, and the food (potluck) was Good too! We also had a "Meet The BreedsBooth" and entered a Hound group show and puppy matches. It is a big event for the dog people in the area.

A big thank you to Garden State Norwegian Elkhound Club members who worked very hard on behalf of NEAA to educate the visiting public on our wonderful breed. Hundreds of people passed by the booth and enjoyed interfacing with both the elkhounds and club members. What wonderful ambassadors GSNEC members are for our breed!
