The NEAA Canine Health and Research Committee was established to generate funding, sponsor health research, and disseminate information as it relates to the health of the Norwegian Elkhound. Within the next decade experts will predict the genetic basis for inherited canine disease as well as canine physical traits and behaviors. As genetic tests become available to the Elkhound breeder, each one of us will partake in a scientific achievement that gives us a choice to eliminate or to dilute an undesirable gene.
For the first time in history, a unique DNA databank has been developed for DNA typing of the Norwegian Elkhound. At least 100 DNA samples have been collected and banked at the UCDavis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory through the donation of buccal swabs from collaborating Elkhound owners and breeders. This DNA databank will not only facilitate research for the development of genetic tests for disease diagnosis, it will allow Elkhound breeders an opportunity to resolve health problems through genetic trait screening. By comparing the DNA structure of unaffected Norwegian Elkhounds with disease-affected dogs, research teams can identify the defective genes that cause disease.
Directed to all members of the NEAA and other Elkhound owners around the world, the Norwegian Elkhound health survey will allow specific conclusions to be drawn about health problems within the breed. Survey results will be utilized to establish health research priorities as well as direct appropriate grants and projects. If you are an Elkhound owner, please take the time to indicate through the health survey form a health problem you may have encountered in an Elkhound owned or bred by you.
The Board of the NEAA has established a separate fund within the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation to support research to benefit the Norwegian Elkhound. Those that cherish the breed can make tax-deductible contributions to help support scientific research projects. All charitable bequests of cash or property, memorial gifts, or donations will be accepted by the Foundation from any individual or organization. The Parent Club Partnership Program is applauded because you, as the donor, advise the Foundation on how the monies are to be used. Contributions can either be made to the Foundation's operating fund or restricted to a specific research grant, the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America Inc. Donor Advised Fund, or any other breed specific fund.
